Soulcraft Book Club

As a vision quest guide many people ask me for resources and information about where they can expand their knowledge of nature-based initiations, myth, ritual and how to live a more soulful life. There are some books, and particular authors, who have deeply influenced my thinking and the way I work. Francis Weller is one.

Keep Calm & Carry On

Our culture can be seen as a flat line culture - we are given a narrow band of emotions that we are allowed to occupy. You might say that we have abandoned the lower regions of grief, sorrow, vulnerability, tenderness… and because they are inextricably linked, the upper regions of joy ave also collapsed.

We aren’t taught how to deal with the inevitable encounters of loss, death, illness, conflict and initiations. Thos necessary death and rebirth moments within a life, necessary for living a soulful life.

Here, we ill explore the ways that Francis Weller has been practicing and sharing about how to redress this balance. To find ways to turn towards life in all its seasons. Within and without. To und understand the wisdom of our bodies an to tenderise the heart so that we can live our lives fully alive.

My Approach

I value learning through experience beyond simply knowing the facts. The rational mind, whilst important, can only take us so far. My work orientates around lived and landed ways of knowing through embodied experience. So, whilst I’m calling this a book club it is not really about the book.

It’s an opportunity to join me in a facilitated and guided way through the themes of Weller’s book.

    • Facilitated discussion and reflection

    • Guidance and enquiry around rites of passage and relevant topics

    • Embodiment practices

    • Space for sharing and time for questions

    • Space for wisdom and insights will emerge

    • Optional practices and exercises to do at home

    • Plenty of laughter and maybe a few tears

  • Each week we cover a chapter in our own time, and come to the group to integrate and embody the learning. Whilst the book is our anchor there will be plenty of time for questions and suggestions of exercises linked to the material.

If, like me, you are dyslexic there is an audio version of this book available. Please don't worry if you can’t keep up with the reading (or listening) - just come along anyway and learn from others insights and experiences.

This will be an informal and relaxed journey. The invitation to share is just that - an invitation - so you can share as little or as much as you like.

Whether you simply love a great book, really want to develop your understanding of soul or are looking for a supportive warm community gathering, this book club is for you.

Guided by rites of passage guide, trauma-informed therapist and coach, Natasha Lythgoe, this space will be rich with learnings and facilitated with care.

There is a proverb from Africa that says,

“When death finds you, make sure it finds you alive.”

I love this adage, a wise reminder that death is always present and that when it comes, it is best to meet it fully alive…

Too many of us suffer from premature death, never fully embracing our lives and being open to the beauty and terror of existence.

This is a result, in great part, of our refusal to accept life on life’s terms. Instead, we try to avoid pain and suffering. We don’t turn our face into the world, into the full experience of life, but instead we slowly back into the grave, stubbornly trying to avoid our losses, ignoring the truth that these sorrows can be our greatest teachers, our greatest gifts.

This half-life is not what we came here to experience. To change this story, we must be able to bring death close to us. We must be willing to live with the ways that death keeps us––paradoxically––aware of whether or not we are fully embracing our lives.
