Elemental Soul

How Myth and Dream Shape the World

How the Body and Nature are our Thresholds

Drawing on my 25 years buddhist background and work as a vision quest guide, this three month intimately-sized programme braids together:

  • Nature-based Ceremony

  • Folk Stories and Myths

  • The Felt Sense of Gendlin’s Somatic Focusing

Across many ancient traditions, humans lived in intimate relationship with the more-than-human world - a world animated by dream, myth, and the deep language of the imagination. This programme is a slow response to the fast pace our times; a living enquiry into how we might root ourselves once more in relationship, reciprocity and reverence.

Elemental Soul will deepen our ability to listen with "the ears of our hearts" to all that is speaking within us and around us - opening doorways to a listening relationship with the natural world, our own natuure bodies, and the old oral story telling tradition.

By tracking these threads and gently following impulses we lisetn for what Soul wants to be known and enter into a call-and -response with the living world and with the currents of the imaginal.

Through these soul-tending practices as we learn to walk more soulfully in this ever changing earth world.

The 3 Intertwining Weaves

Folks Stories and Myths

Ancient oral stories, some dating as far back as 4000 BCE, hold within them alchemical impulses and maps for self/world transformation.

Approached in the right way folk stories and their archetypal languages enter and dream us. If we follow what is ignited within, without limiting its gifts to self development and psychology, we may enter into an enchanted relationship with life.

The Felt Sense of Embodied Focusing

“Your physically felt body is in fact part of a gigantic system of here and other places, now and other times, you and other in fact the whole universe.”
Gendlin

What emerges over time from this deceptively simple somatic practice is an interior friendship with our own authentic being, and a natural confidence in our own intuition. Importantly it is a vital doorway to reciprical relationship with the land and the imaginal.

Ceremony With Nature

In between our ‘live’ sessions you will be invited to track the soul threads through nature-based practices used within nature-based rites of passage communities.

Alongside this we will explore the nature of ritual and how to create small rituals of meaning for youself.

It is here that we explore the space between personal vision and spiritual vision.

We will do this through:

I will tell a myth or folktale in the oral storytelling way, inviting the story to move through us as a living presence. As images take root, we will turn to the body as a means of connecting with and tracking what has begun to stir - ‘what wants to be known’ - both personally and collectively.

From this perspective, myth or story can be understood as a carrier of terma - a term that literally means “hidden treasure.” In Tibetan Buddhism, and in its predecessor, the shamanic Bön tradition, termas are spiritual wisdom teachings intentionally concealed until the time is right for them to be revealed and shared. In this sense, myth and story reach far beyond entertainment or self-development; they can be seen as living presences that move within the psyche and the body of us, and within the world around us.

This is where our tracking begins.

Following the thread

The idea for this has its roots in an emergent method which rose out of a month spent in the French Alps in 2016, under the guidance of my wilderness mentor Annie Bloom.

An intense fiery dream swept through me on my first evening and during those weeks I found myself in what I can only (crudely) describe as a treasure hunt between dream, art, ritual and land. What emerged during those weeks felt enchanted and tangible, both. And full of meaning.

Over the intervening years I have been very slowly developing, and tentatively facilitating this weave between dream (and other doorways to soul) ritual, land and the wisdom of the body.

Last year I guided three experimental programmes called Following The River Underground which arose from a dream of my Grandmother's garden where I was shown a large earth womb, shaped into the soil.

Following this dream in the body through Focusing, I settled in alongside a vast serpentine being, following her like a river underground. Observing her slow emphatic potent uselessness, in relation to our cultural norms of productivity and effectiveness. At that time I made an small offering in a nearby river where I shaped an earth womb with clay and sang into it as though it were a two-way sounding conch.

Over the years, I’ve come to have profound confidence in what this journey of weaving opens in me

An interesting idea that turns up in myths and stories is that the crises we experience, both individually and collectively, are not here to destroy us but rather to break the spell of the little self, and to break the spell of collective lives that are also imagined as small and not connected to the source and origins of life

That the crises that we experience individually or collectively are here to crack the shell and break us open to the inner eyes of the soul and to give us the opportunity to reconnect to the deeper self which knows why we are here and what our life purpose already is.
